Arthritis – Is It a Curse?

By Deline Tan

Arthritis – the inflammation of the joints, which affect the musculoskeletal part at the leg joints or hand, is an inherited genetic cause. For example, my mum suffers from arthritis, so is my two aunties (my mum’s sisters), and my uncle (my mum’s brother), including myself and my two other sisters. Arthritis has passed down its family root from my mother’s family. The pain in the joints is excruciating. When the ligament wears off, the joint is stiff and painful. There may be swelling, with fluid in the joints but this usually is not painful.

The hustle for me in my knee pain is that I couldn’t exercise. I have body fats that I want to get rid of but I can’t do knee squat or other exercises because of the pain at the knee joints. I would also like a game of badminton weekly, but I can’t play the game because of the knee pain. Walking is also affecting my leg, as I have tried walking for two hours at the beach and my leg was painful after I came back. Now I don’t exercise anymore because of the pain. What kind of lifestyle is it without exercises?

My mum has arthritis for more than 30 years. Her leg is bold now, with a V shaped. She can hardly sit properly on a chair. Bending down to sit is very painful for her. One of my aunts has problem walking. She literally drags herself while walking. The pain prevents her from walking normally. For myself, each time when I climb the bus steps, I will feel the pain. It is not a joke when you suffer from arthritis. It disables you from participating in normal activities, and for me it means no exercises.

There is limited movement that I can engaged in, as the cartilage which protects the joint wears off, and the pressure is on the joints  without any cushion, as the bones rub together, causing great pain. However, one of the key ways to lessen the pain is to engage in selected exercises like physiotherapy, which needs guidance from the physiotherapist. Low impact aerobic activity, with endurance exercises like flexibility strength training for muscle tone is one of the many types of physio-training.

Eating food like omega 3 fatty acid in fish oil helps in alleviating the joint pain. Rest from fatigue from work is also important, as you put less stress on the legs. Eating balance diet is important as the body needs sufficient nutrients to sustain the body from the joints wear and tear. Fish like sardine is good, as you eat the bones of the fish too, which helps to build up the mass in the bones.

There is no cure for arthritis except for surgery, which the cartilages are replaced with a plastic articulators which help to give flexibility to the joints. As for myself, the pain is mild and the best way is to have a good diet, rest from activity and trust God for healing. There is nothing that one can do when one is stricken with the problem. The best way is to break the generation curse and ask God to remove the problem. It can be done as God is our creator.

Chiropractic – A Science of Modern Treatment

By Deline Tan

Chiropractic – the neuroscience of musculoskeletal adjustment of the spine is an art that modern science has acquired, to be the next-in-line of medicine practice by chiropractor. The word chiro means hand, and practic means to practice; hence chiropractic means the use of hands to practice the art of skeletal adjustments.

Chiropractic means the examination of the biomechanics structure in the function of the spine. People who suffer from lower back pain, neck pain or extreme joint conditions, can easily seek a Chiropractor’s help, as modern medicine may be difficult to help adjust the structure of the bones.

Chiropractic is a very new science in the treatment of skeletal problem, as it was only founded in 1895 by an American magnetic healer by the name of Daniel David Palmer. However, the practice of chiropractic has through the years gone into a ‘dark age’, where the Medicine Faculty of Doctors rejected the practice of chiropractic treatment, calling it a scum and considered it to be an underhanded way of practice.

In the period in the 80’s, the General Practitioners of Doctors brought the Society of Chiropractors to court, deeming the practice as cultist and refused to acknowledge the discovery of chiropractic. However, the court of law ruled over the fact that chiropractic practice is legitimate and found no flaws in the practice of such a science. Since that proclaimation and the ‘go ahead’ to license chiropractor, there have been a mushrooming of Chiropractors sprouting out all over the world.

Today people accept the treatment of chiropractic care, and many athletes who suffer from injury seek the help of the Chiropractor. The nervous system is the primarily sector which the Chiropractor aims to bring relief and restoration to the body’s ability to increase the body’s immunity and resistance to illnesses. By improving the spine, it will also help improve the nervous system.

Chiropractic also adjusts musculoskeletal and nervous system in its role in health and disease. Chiropractor uses hands-on spinal manipulation and other alternative treatments, to help the alignment of the body’s musculoskeletal structure, positioning the spine to heal by itself, without surgery or medication. Such is the advancement of the treatment, and patients can focus on correcting the causes of physical problems from misalignments of the bones in the body, especially the spine, through the touch of a Chiropractor’s hand.

Chiropractic is primarily used as a pain relief alternative for muscles, joints, bones, and connective tissues, such as cartilage, ligaments and tendons. Regular treatment can help relief long term pain of the bones structures, and eventually brings healing to the body. It may be a little expensive for long term treatment, but usually the payment is in bulk payment of a couple of sessions, but some opt for each visit of about $50.

Chiropractic is getting very popular now, long gone were the days when people snare at the thought of Chiropractor. It is indeed a modern science of a new discovery, of a pain healer, which is difficult to detect in General Practitioners practice if a bone is out of alignment. It is through the spine that corrective measures are detected to determine the cause of the pain of the body, and the Chiropractor certainly has his way of putting right the spinal cord right back again when the cause of the pain is detected.

A visit to a Chiropractor is not a dream, it is a reality that you can make it happen if you were to look for one when your muscles and bones start aching.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome – The Fatigue of the Soul

By Deline Tan

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome – is a kind of fatigue that refers to severe, continued tiredness that is not relieved by rest, and is not directly caused by any other medical conditions. It is a kind of problem that keeps one bewildered and restless, and there is no known cure. How do you like to be in this state for the next six months, as this is as long as the problem will exist.

Imagine yourself not doing anything fruitful but you feel sloughful and lazy all day long. Work is rather impossible as you find it impossible to do anything. Your concentration level is zero, and there is really nothing that you can do about it. What then is the cause of this disease?

It has not been confirmed yet about the cause of this disease, but possibility could be due to an Opstein-Barr Virus or Humus Herpes Virus-6 (HHV-6). The long fatigue could be due to the inflammation of the nervous system because of a faulty immune system response. This may keep you down for a long time and the treatment is either medication or cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), which is a gradual exercise that may help alleviate the problem. The treatment for medication is anti-anxiety drug, which is an antidepressant drug.

Other forms of alleviating the problem are relaxation and stress-reduction techniques, which help manage chronic pain and fatigue. The relaxation techniques are deep breathing exercises, massage therapy and muscle relaxation. The culprit for this terrible disease affects mainly women between the ages of 30 to 50.

Many people with this disease suffer depression and other psychological disorder. Other symptoms are similiar to flu and viral infections, which include muscle ache, headache and extreme fatigue and tiredness. This severity will cause the person from participating in any activities, and she will also experience forgetfulness, confusion, irritability, mild fever and joint pain. Other disorders include sore throat, sore lymph nodes in the neck or under the arms.

The factors caused are due to age, stress, genetics and environmental factors. The best way to combat the fatigue is to engage in mild physical exercises, and the person is encouraged to maintain an active social life. Other forms of help are healthy diet, good sleep management techniques and regular activities like walking or jogging. It may be difficult to start these activities, but she must put in an effort to resist the laziness or fatigue.

Whatever that the person is going through suffering from chronic fatigue, the best solution is to keep herself active and engage in mild work. Motivation and help from family members and friends to lead a normal life are some of the ways to keep her going from feeling despondent and helpless. She has to do whatever that she can to fight the fatigue, and eventually she has to come out of her physical struggle. She has to stay positive to help win her battle, and slowly one step at a time, she can climb out on the other side of the fence if she were to just keep moving forward.

If may be difficult to have an attack of this terrible disease, but if the patient is not deterred to overcome the problem, she will soon come off the better of it.

Water – The Precious Quencher

By Deline Tan

Water – the most essential liquid that our body needs, is one of the most important commodities in our domestic life. Water helps our body to perform many functions. It aids digestion and absorption of food. It maintains muscle tone and supply nutrients and oxygen to the cells. It rids the body of waste and serves as a natural cooling system for the body.

We can’t survive without water. Our body is made up of 60% water, and a drop of 2% of water in our body will lead to dehydration. This may cause fuzzy short term memory, faced problem with simple basic maths, and difficulty focusing on small print while reading or seeing the computer. Mild dehydration can also lead to daytime fatigue. Our cell and organs in the entire anatomy of the physiology depend on water for its functioning. Water cleanses and washes away toxin in the body , clearing the liver and kidney from the waste products.

We need eight glasses of clear water daily, to help keep the body system in check, for example, the waste in the colon needs water to easily pass out the waste; the perspiration from the skin needs replenishment of water for the body; water helps relieve constipation; and water is essential for weight loss.

We may not die in hunger, but if we don’t drink water for many days, we will die. Water can decrease the onset of colon cancer by 45%; bladder cancer by 50%, and even reduce the risk of breast cancer. Water acts as a deterrent against sicknesses in the body, as it keeps the cell intact, and helps monitor the functioning of the body.

3% of the earth’s water is freshwater. It is estimated that by 2030, the demand for water will exceed 50%. One billion people will lack fresh drinking water, as 97% of the ocean water is undrinkable. Water is in a constant cycle, as it evaporates from the ocean, travels through the air, rains down on the land and flows back into the ocean.

Water is a molecule with one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms known as H2O. Water is the only substance that occurs naturally as a solid form – ice, liquid and gas. The freezing point of water is 0 degree censius, and the boiling point is 100 degree censius. The solid form forms glaciers, frozen lakes and rivers, snow, hail and frost. The liquid is rain and dew, which covers three quarters of the earth surface in swamps, lakes, rivers and oceans. Water also occurs in the soil and beneath the earth’s surface as a vast groundwater reservoir. As gas or water vapour, it occurs as fog, steam and clouds.

It is undeniable that water is very important for man’s existence. We cannot live without it. Man, animal and plant need this precious commodity, as our body is covered with two thirds of water. It is most refreshing when we thirst, but that is a sign that we are dehydrated, therefore we need to constantly sip water throughout the whole day to prevent dehydration.

Soda drinks, coffee and tea cannot take the place of water to replenish the body and flush away the toxic wastes. We need pure water to wash the system in our body. Our urine must be clear in colour or like light lemon colour, otherwise we would consider to be dehydrated if the urine is deep yellow.

Water is precious. Consume plenty of it and do not drink less than eight glasses a day, and you can beat the heat without being dehydrated.

Indigestion – How to Avoid it

By Deline Tan

Have you ever wonder why you are constipated all the time? Some people just live with this problem when there is a way out to indigestion. Our lifestyle will determine the effect to eliminate constipation and indigestion completely. The food you eat will determine your digestive state. If you eat too much fried food and drink very little water, you are in to a lifestyle of constant constipation and indigestion.

Water is the determining factor, as if even when you eat high fibre diet but have no water, your stool will be hard and it is impossible to eliminate the wastes. Bowels need moisture to pass properly in the colon. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables will help eased indigestion. Papaya is a great cleanser, along with carrots, corn, squash, bamboo shoots, zucchini and beets. These fruits and vegetables help to purge the old fecal matter that may have stuck in the colon for a long time.

Licorice tea is very good as it creates moisture and helps in the bowel movement. Eating whole grain diet with brown rice will ease digestion too. Be creative in your eating habit. Eat many different coloured vegetables daily, like white for cabbage, orange for carrot, green for leafy vegetable, purple for brinjo, red for tomato, and many other varied vegetables. The different coloured vegetables give a high dose of vitamins and minerals, as eating the various vegetables daily will assist you in your phytonutrient diet.

Drinking a lot of water is crucial for the moisture of the bowel, as without it, it prevents the wastes from passing smoothly through the colon; and it will cause a weakening of the colon muscles, as it finds it difficult to squeeze the muscle, thus causing constipation.

Some chronic constipation is hard to cure. This kind needs medical attention. It is known that Elvis Presley died of constipation, where the bloated stomach was beyond cure. You may not realise that there are people who died due to constipation. They carry between 30 to 40 lbs of fecal matter that is like cement.

When you feel a feeling of fullness, or discomfort during or after a meal, accompanied by burning or pain in the upper stomach, then you need to be cautious in the way you eat. If pain persisted, see a doctor. The symptoms of constipation is bloating, belching and gas, followed by nausea, vomiting, acidic taste, growling stomach, burning in the stomach and upper abdominal pain.

To avoid constipation, do not eat too much or eating too fast, or consuming high fat foods, or eating during stressful moments. Drinking too much alcohol and smoking will lead to stress and fatigue, causing an imbalance in the body hormones, thus causing constipation. Make a habit to eat slowly as eating too quickly will cause you to swallow excessive air, which may cause belching and bloating.

If you lead a healthy life style of eating a constant portion of food daily without overeating, and eat high fibre foods plus plenty of water, you will not have constipation. Avoid the hustle of suffering from this avoidable indigestion by always eating right and you will never have the difficulty in going to the toilet daily.

Pork – The Unhealthy Means

By Deline Tan

Are you a pork lover? We eat pork as it has been a tradition for thousands of years, but if you were to check the biblical principles in Leviticus 11, God has strictly lay down His laws what are clean and unclean animals.

We see in Leviticus 11:4 God underlies those animals that chew the cud and have cloven hooves, are considered unclean and are not to be eaten. In verse 7 of Leviticus 11, it says that the swine though it divides the hoof, having cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud, is considered unclean. God specifically says that we are not to eat pork because it is an unclean animal. According to each one’s conscience, we are to follow our conviction without wavering. If you think you want to violate the scripture and still eat pork, then it is up to your own consciousness.

There are many reasons why we should not eat pork. First, it’s a dirty animal that eats rubbish and dirty food and sludge itself in the mud all the time. The flesh of the pig is full of fats and unhealthy for our consumption because of saturated fats. Secondly, what the pigs eat will affect our health, as they ate dead animals and food which is unclean. If you eat the pig, you are eating the deadly food that may cause you ill health.

I’ve observed how my mother cooks the pork. First she would drain it with hot water, and the water will be oily and smell bad. My mum said that the meat is dirty, therefore it needs to be boiled over before finally cooking it. The cloudy water after she washes it over the hot water looks really dirty. Do you want to eat something that is dirty?

I’ve this experience when I ate my dinner one day, where I feel that I wanted to vomit while eating the pork meat. There is a sense that the meat is dirty and that I should not eat it. God has warned me not to eat pork because it is considered an unclean animal, therefore I’m not eating pork anymore, even though I like char siew rice. I just have to sacrifice my so call favoured meal because it is not right to eat pork.

I know you may eat pork all your life and have grown to like it, and so do I. However, taking the side of a healthy diet, I’ll rather not eat it anymore as I choose to eat foods that are healthy like beef and lamb. Beef has good protein, is soft and tender, and is healthy to consume. I enjoy the beef ball noodles, as the soup is really beefy as it is thick and taste really nice. Beef steak is also one of the many good foods that you can indulge in, as personally myself, I love fillet and sirloin steaks; having it rare, and it is really tender.

The next time you go out to the restaurant to eat, stop ordering pork chop and go for sirloin steak or lamb chop. You will pat yourself on your back if you were to do so because it really is the right choice to eat a descent meal with the right diet. I miss steaks and lamb chops. It’s been a while that I eat them, but I certainly wouldn’t go for bak tuk teh at all, even though many people love it.

Sacrifice yourself from eating pork, and you’ll find that you’re obeying God’s Word, as well as keeping healthy with better choice to eat from. When was the last time that you eat pork? Do not do it again the next time you have the opportunity to sacrifice your loved bowl of bak tuk teh.
